Where cheap car hire usually stops being cheap
A low headline rate is easy to advertise and easy to claw back. The four places it normally happens, and where we stand on each:
Full-to-full fuel
You get a full tank and return a full tank. No prepaid fuel you can't use up, and nothing bought back at a worse rate than you paid.
Insurance in the rate
Comprehensive cover and unlimited mileage are included, not an upsell waiting at the desk. You can lower the excess if you want to, but you don't have to.
No off-airport shuttle
Collection is at Park East inside the airport — a few minutes on foot from arrivals, not a bus to an industrial estate.
Free cancellation
Up to 48 hours before pick-up, and nothing is charged online in the first place.
Cheap car hire — the questions worth asking
- Is €6 a day really the price?
- It's the daily rate for the Economy class, and it's what the booking flow charges — three days comes to €18, not €18 plus a list of extras discovered at the desk. Insurance and unlimited mileage are already in it. What can add to it is optional: a lower excess, a child seat, an additional driver, or the young-driver supplement if you're under 25.
- What's the catch with cheap car hire in Malta?
- Usually one of three things: a fuel policy that sells you a full tank and buys back nothing, a low headline rate that assumes you'll buy excess cover at the desk, or an off-airport depot reached by shuttle. We run full-to-full, publish the excess up front, and hand the car over at Park East inside the airport.
- Do I have to pay a deposit?
- Not to book — nothing is taken online. At pick-up a refundable excess is held on a card: €800 on Essential cover, less on Smart, nothing at all on Zero excess. It's released when the car comes back.
- Is the cheapest car big enough?
- For two people and a couple of cases, the Economy class is genuinely fine and easier to park than anything larger — which matters more in Malta than boot space does. For a family, the seven-seater or an SUV is the sensible step up.
