Monthly and long-term car rental in Malta

Here for a month, a season, or the winter? Malta is a different place when you're living in it rather than visiting — and a car of your own is what makes the difference. Tell us your dates and we'll put together one all-in price for the whole stay.

Why a long stay works better with a car

Malta is small, but small doesn't mean quick. The buses reach most towns and are genuinely useful, yet services thin out in the evenings, the popular routes fill, and a trip that looks like nothing on a map can involve a change and a wait. Over a week that's a minor irritation. Over two months it shapes what you bother doing.

A car for the whole stay removes the planning. You leave for a morning in Sliema, an afternoon at a quiet bay or a weekend on Gozo when it suits you, without checking a timetable first. It matters most in the places buses serve least well — the north, the inland villages, and Gozo, which is rural enough that a car stops being a convenience and becomes the point.

Winters here are mild by European standards, so a car stays useful right through the cooler months, which is exactly when the bus feels least appealing.

What a long hire includes

A long stay doesn't change the basis. You get the same terms as any hire on this site:

  • Comprehensive insurance from day one, not an upsell at the desk
  • Unlimited mileage across Malta and Gozo
  • Free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up
  • The same serviced fleet, whether you take it for three days or three months

A refundable deposit is held on a card at pick-up and released when the car comes back. Over several weeks a good many drivers decide the zero excess upgrade is worth it — it holds nothing at all, which is a different feeling to carrying a €800 excess around for two months.

Licence, age and deposit

No different from a short hire. A full licence held at least 12 months, EU and EEA licences accepted as issued, and an International Driving Permit alongside anything not in the Latin alphabet. The minimum age is 21, with a supplement for drivers under 25. Nothing about the cover thins out because the rental is longer — it's the same protection for more of your time here.

How to get a long-stay quote

There's no monthly rate published on this page, and that's deliberate. The booking flow is built around shorter trips, so stretching a daily rate out to a month wouldn't give you a figure worth trusting. We'd rather build it around the things only you know:

  • Your dates — roughly when you arrive and how long you expect to stay
  • The car you have in mind: easy to park, an automatic, an SUV, something for the family
  • How long the stay runs — a month, a season and half a year all price differently

Send those over and we'll come back with one all-in long-stay price — insurance and unlimited mileage in the figure, free cancellation so your plans can still move.

Long-term hire — common questions

Do you publish a monthly rate for long-term car hire in Malta?
No. The booking flow on this site is built for shorter trips, so it won't produce a monthly figure. A long stay is quoted around your dates, the car you want and how long you're here — which lands fairer than stretching a daily rate that was never designed to cover a month. Send us the details and we'll come back with one all-in price.
What's included in a long-term hire?
Exactly what's included in a short one: comprehensive insurance, unlimited mileage across Malta and Gozo, and free cancellation up to 48 hours before pick-up. Nothing gets thinner because the hire is longer. Cover runs from Essential, which holds a €800 excess, up to Zero excess, which holds nothing at all.
Can I take a long-term hire car to Gozo?
Yes. Your cover and unlimited mileage apply on Gozo exactly as they do on Malta, and the Ċirkewwa–Mġarr ferry carries cars year-round. Over a long stay most people cross more than once, so it's worth knowing the crossing takes about 25 minutes.
What licence do I need for a long stay?
The same as any hire — a full licence held for at least 12 months. EU and EEA licences are accepted as issued; if yours isn't in the Latin alphabet, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Ask us before booking if you're unsure rather than finding out at the desk.
